本科生和研究生一共有五千多人，教师有三百多位，很多是教授。

Undergraduates and graduate students together number over five thousand; there are over three hundred teachers, many of them professors.

就在前面。图书馆晚上开到十点，很多同学在那儿自习。

食堂呢？我有点儿饿了。

Shítáng ne? Wǒ yǒudiǎnr è le.

And the canteen? I’m getting a bit hungry.

在操场旁边。食堂有各种菜，尤其是面条，十分好吃。

Zài cāochǎng pángbiān. Shítáng yǒu gèzhǒng cài, yóuqí shì miàntiáo, shífēn hǎochī.

Next to the sports ground. The canteen has all kinds of dishes — the noodles are especially good.

Grammar

1. 十分 “very” and 更加 “even more”

十分 means the same as 非常 “very” but sounds more formal: 十分重要 “very important”, 十分感谢 “thank you very much”. 不十分 is “not very”: 我不十分明白. 更加 is the two-syllable form of 更 “even more”, usually before a two-syllable word: 更加努力, 更加喜欢: 来中国以后，我更加喜欢汉语了.

这个问题十分重要。

Zhège wèntí shífēn zhòngyào.

This question is very important.

来中国以后，我更加喜欢汉语了。

Lái Zhōngguó yǐhòu, wǒ gèngjiā xǐhuan Hànyǔ le.

Since coming to China I like Chinese even more.

王教授做了三十年教育工作，教学十分认真。

Wáng jiàoshòu zuòle sānshí nián jiàoyù gōngzuò, jiàoxué shífēn rènzhēn.

Professor Wang has worked in education for thirty years and teaches very conscientiously.

2. 尤其 “especially” and 多么…啊 “how…!”

…, 尤其是 + highlighted part · 多么 + adj. + 啊!

尤其 singles out one of several: 我喜欢运动，尤其是游泳 “I like sport, especially swimming”. It usually comes in the second part of the sentence, often with 是. 多么 makes an exclamation “how…!, what a…!”: 多么漂亮啊！, 多么漂亮的校园啊！ — usually with 啊 at the end.

我喜欢运动，尤其是游泳。

Wǒ xǐhuan yùndòng, yóuqí shì yóuyǒng.

I like sport, especially swimming.

这儿的秋天多么漂亮啊！

Zhèr de qiūtiān duōme piàoliang a!

How beautiful autumn is here!

3. 各, 各位, 各种, 各个, 各地 and the written 此

各 means “each, every (separately)”: 各国 “all countries”, 各班. 各位 is a polite way to address an audience: 各位老师、各位同学 “dear teachers and students”. 各种 is “all kinds of”: 各种菜. 各个 is “each (of them)”: 各个教室. 各地 is “various places, everywhere”: 各地的学生. 此 is written “this, here”: 在此 “here”, 此人 “this person”. 期 counts issues and intakes: 第一期 “the first intake, the first issue”.

💡 Did you know?: Freshman military training

The academic year at Chinese universities starts in September, and for almost all freshmen it opens with military training, 军训 jūnxùn: usually two to three weeks of drill in matching uniforms right on the campus 操场 sports ground. It is meant to build discipline and help newcomers make friends. Students usually live in shared dormitory rooms and eat in the inexpensive canteens, 食堂.
