Grammar
1. The interjections 啊 ā and 嗯 ǹg
啊 at the start of a sentence is the interjection ā: surprise or admiration, “oh!, ah!”: 啊,下雪了! The tone changes with the meaning: á asks “huh?”, à is “ah, I see”. (At the end of a sentence 啊 is the particle a you already know: 好啊.) 嗯 ǹg is “mm-hm, uh-huh”: agreement or an answer to a call: 嗯,我知道了.
2. 就是说 “that is to say”, 就是 “exactly”
就是说 (more formally 这就是说) restates what was said in other words: 他每天都说汉语,就是说,他的口语会越来越好 “he speaks Chinese every day, which means his speaking will keep improving”. 就是 on its own stresses “exactly, precisely”: 我说的就是这个人 “this is exactly the person I mean”.
3. 不是…,而是… “not…, but…”
不是 A,而是 B
This corrects a wrong idea: the first part is denied, the second asserted. 他不是老师,而是翻译 “he isn’t a teacher but a translator”; 我不是不想去,而是没有时间 “it’s not that I don’t want to go — I just don’t have time”. 而是 is firmer and more formal than plain 是.
4. Being polite: 打扰, 麻烦, 抱歉, 道歉
打扰一下 “sorry to bother you” is how you address a stranger. 麻烦你… “would you mind…” comes before a request: 麻烦你帮我翻译一下; 麻烦你了 “thanks for your trouble”. 抱歉 is an adjective “sorry”: 真抱歉, 很抱歉. 道歉 is the verb “to apologise”, but it takes no object: “apologise to someone” is 向 + person + 道歉 (not 道歉他). 原谅 is “to forgive”: 请原谅我.

💡 Did you know?: “Have you eaten?” instead of “hello”
When meeting someone they know, Chinese people often greet them not with 你好 but with a question: 吃了吗? “Have you eaten?” or 去哪儿? “Where are you off to?”. It isn’t an interrogation or a lunch invitation, just a way to 打招呼, to say hello. The answer is short: 吃了 / 还没呢 “yes / not yet”, 去上班 “to work”. 你好 sounds more formal and is used more with strangers.
