Grammar

1. 者 — “one who…”

者 after a verb or adjective makes a person: 读 “read” → 读者 “reader”, 作 → 作者 “author”, 记 → 记者 “journalist” (literally “one who records”). It is a written element and isn’t used on its own. Also: 前者 “the former”, 后者 “the latter”.

之 is the written form of 的; it lives on in set phrases: 睡觉之前 “before bed”, 下课之后 “after class”, 文字和图之间 “between the text and pictures”, 在这些作品之中 “among these works”, 最好的作品之一 “one of the best works”, 三分之一 “one third”.

中国的城市很大,拿上海来说,有两千多万人。
